We Made It (Poem)

Its around the year 06’

At my bros middle school game

But the way he plays he resembles your son at around that age

You haven’t been around that much

But that’s all about to change

Doctor said you had that cancer

In my heart you still the same

But his final game at goldsmith

You made it their on your death bed

You promised him and you meant that

Your word is bond and you kept it

You climbed the bleachers with no assist

We fighting tears while you climbing

You showed us all your real self

And words can’t describe it

Ohh

It brings tears to my eyes

How you loved me, von, and dee

When came to your will to the house gave us three the key

And I love you for that

Those memories we cherish that

And every time I look back, I realize we made it

We made it

The Love for My Parents

The love I have for my parents and immediate family goes to a deep magnitude for which I can’t even describe. There’s really not one quality that my parents have that makes me think of them as corrupt or immoral and makes me hate them. Of course I’ve had my dislike for instance when I use to receiving whippings. I just would resent them. But as of now I realize these experiences help me become a better person. Now, I even reminisce and laugh at my past whippings. The morals, disciplines and structures my parents have instilled in me has shaped me to become the man I am and starting to become. My mother is the person I will consult with about ANYTHING.  Relationships, school, life, I discuss everything with my mother. My father I would say is my one my biggest role model besides my siblings. I can tell that through all of my accomplishments and failures his still is a proud father. I consider my Father to be spectacular! He is one of the best men on the face of the earth. Although he may have gone in out of prison, he continuously gained our trust.. Since then my father has even worked as an employee from the prison he was once incarcerated in. The drive, determination, integrity, and honesty he portrays are just some of the characteristics I love about him. From the time when my father was imprisoned until now he has acquired numerous degrees from different school such as Auburn, Alabama A&M, Athens, etc.. He currently holds the position of supervisor for AIDS Action Coalition in Huntsville, AL. . I love my parents and everything about them. All the things about them make them the unique individuals that they are

Br’er Rabbit

I remembered being told last semester about the Br’er rabbit tales. I was quite surprised that Walt Disney had published a movie that I didn’t ever hear of . I mean growing up I was a big fan of Disney and seen ALL the classics such as The Lion King, Aladdin, and etc…but the Br’er tales had a different underlining meaning to it. Many of those in the African American community took offense to the movie due to the dialect and the usage of the “N word”. As I watched some of the clips, I considered the Br’er Rabbit tales to be a commentary of the plantation culture after enslaved African Americans reincarnated the stories from their lineages. The Br’er rabbit tales can be traced to traditional folklores in Western, South, and Central Africa. It closely resembles “the spider” plots in Akan heritage. Folklores usually have various significant meanings which is why it was imperative that this tale was told among “folk”. I think that Br’er Rabbit wits to overcome adversity and circumstances represents enslaved Africans overcoming Euro-Americans, which was the meaning to keep this tale to continue to circulate. Although the tale was shared throughout the American culture, ultimately those who were enslaved understood the underlie meaning of the story. Joel Chandler Harris suggested that the tales were pithy anecdotes passed down for entertainment value yet he isn’t essentially part of the African American culture. For examples, slaves sang gospel songs as coded messages for the Underground Railroad. These coded messages were understood by those who were part of the system. I think the Br’er tales were told to give those enslaved hope no matter what dilemma faced them. You can find some of the clips on YouTube if you want to view it for yourself.

The Perfect Image

I read an article that was labeled “Is our society creating eating disorders”. The question I wanted to address from this article was primarily concerning women, it stated “Why do eating disorders primarily occur in Western society?” I think these disorders primarily occur in western society because of the emphasis we put on the beauty of what we find to be “attractive”. If you don’t fit this norm even at a young age you are liable to be a social outcast in western society. Mass media have an imperative role in showing or supposedly portraying the image of flawless individual. Magazines, television, billboards and other various forms of advertising markets displays the perfect image of a woman of being slender, curvaceous, with a gorgeous face. Although America has the uppermost rate in obesity everybody wants to be viewed as that perfect women or young lady and do anything to obtain this image. This sometimes may lead to an eating disorder or even maybe an obsession of trying to be thin. I believe that other society does not place the prominence on being slim which may result of them having lower rates in the category of having eating disorders. Each person should be unique! If everyone looked the same there would not be in diversity in looks. It’s not all about trying to be the thinnest it should be about living a healthy lifestyle.

Lacos Tacos!!!

Taco Bell has been serving their great classic Tacos to consumers for around 50 years. On March the 8th they made a great addition to their menu!!! This taco was so inventive that they even had a countdown for it release date. The taco I am talking about is the Lacos Taco. Taco bell described it as a taco supreme made with premium seasoned beef, crisp lettuce, diced juicy red ripe tomatoes, real cheddar cheese, topped with cool reduced-fat sour cream, in a shell made from Nacho Cheese Doritos Chips. When I took a bite of it, I was in taco heaven! It was such a delight to my taste buds! Everything about it just screams greatness!!!

Be Aware!

December 1st is one of the most significant days in the United States of America. As you see red ribbons being worn and people being commemorated you realize its HIV/ AIDS day. Can you ponder on the statement that one of the major populations at risk are the elderly. Not only are they are risk for HIV/AIDS but there health care, mental health care, and the risk of being an underserved population is all at stake. In the field of geriatric care there are many concerns and disputes over how the elderly are being treated. Some caregivers actually neglect and abuse the elderly not only physically but emotionally (psychologically) and sexually. Verbal forms of emotional abuse of the elders may result from intimidation through screeching or terrorizations, humiliation and ridicule, and habitual blaming or scapegoating. Psychological non-verbal abuse may come from disregarding the elderly person, segregating an elder from associates or activities, petrifying or intimidating the elderly person. Not only are they at risk for these various forms of abuse but their also at risk for financial exploitation. An immoral caregiver or a swindle artist may misuse or steal an elder’s private checks, credit cards, or accounts, domestic goods, forge the elder’s signature, and steal their identity. Doctors have also been known to take advantage of a senior citizen by overcharging for medical care and services. Other ways include doctors or a medical staff exploiting seniors is by Medicaid fraud and fraudulent remedies.

To Act Black or White

Growing up in an African American community I heard this term plenty of times “Why is he/she trying to act black?” or “Why is he/she trying to act white?” What exactly does it mean to act white or black? What is the definition of a stereotypical white or black person? Our society has placed a stamp on how one should act or they are considered a “sell out” in some ways.

From my observation when a Caucasian person tries to embrace and live in the culture of an African American, they are considered acting black. For instance, if a white male or woman wears urban clothes and talk with a draw they can be considered acting black. It isn’t just clothing and Ebonics but it can be hairstyles also. Dreadlocks and Micro braids are stated to be deliberately hairstyles for blacks.  If a Caucasian where these hairstyles they can often be judged by the general public.

It’s also vice versa with African Americans. African American that sound extremely proper and portray the image that their better than everybody is considered to act white. Another instance is if you listen to country music, hard rock, classical etc… and where clothes that isn’t urban.  Society has grouped races buy what they wear, how they talk, how they carry themselves and what they listen too. Do you find yourself victum of doing this?? Is this right???
